Job Description.
The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) is a union, dedicated to improving the workplace and the quality of life for all education employees and to protecting their hard-won rights. The MTA is looking for a Director of Government Relations who will develop and administer programs to carry out the goals of the Massachusetts Teachers Association through the political, electoral, and legislative process, as well as direct the activities of the Government Relations Division, managing the Division staff to achieve the goals of MTA by implementing MTA's legislative and lobbying program. This position will report to the Executive Director of MTA and is conveniently located in our Boston Office.
Job Details
Develop, direct, and promote MTA's lobby strategy to achieve goals of the legislative program and to defend against attempts to undermine the legal rights of MTA members and locals and MTA's policy positions.
Work closely with the Director of Grassroots Campaigns to develop strategies for grassroots engagement to achieve MTA’s legislative and electoral goals.
Work with other divisions - particularly Communications, Legal, and Affiliate Services, as appropriate, to accomplish the legislative goals of MTA.
Develop/maintain working relationships with key leadership in the Legislative and Executive branches.
Report regularly to the Executive Director on MTA’s legislative program, legislative issues and developments.
Coordinate and provide political training to members and staff, as well as provide regular written communication n legislative issues and developments, including a weekly update and prompt analysis of the annual state budget bills and other legislation.
Understand polling and direct its use when necessary to further the legislative and political goals of MTA.
Monitor Congressional actions and work with NEA to lobby Congressional delegation and accomplish the electoral goals of NEA.
Maintain data systems for tracking legislative activity, staff assignments, and support for MTA’s legislative program.
Staff the Candidate Recommendation Committee, which is responsible for recommending candidates for state and Congressional elections.
Staff the VOTE Committee and develop a program for MTA's political action committee.
Propose an annual budget for the Division and administer the Division budget as adopted.
Serve as consultant to member and staff committees and represent the MTA as assigned.
Effectively manage all staff, ensuring a diverse, collaborative, and high functioning team.
Carry out MTA policies and personnel procedures, and evaluate Division staff.
Required Qualifications.
To be successful in this role you will need:
Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree preferred.
Management experience.
Ten years of experience working in the legislative and political arena.
A record of professional accomplishment.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and writing skills.
Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends.
Ability to travel statewide.
Ability to lift 20 lbs.
