Job Description.

Context: The Chapter Director implements policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee. Manages the organization’s staff and the operation of the following areas: fundraising, conservation and legislative program, volunteer development and member services, budgeting and financial management, and media relations.

Scope: Carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the Executive Committee for the assigned areas of chapter programs and operations. Responsible for managing staff and financial resources for the assigned areas.

Fundraising, overseeing legislative programs and pursuit of committee goals, particularly conservation program.

Primary Responsibilities:

Works with the Chair, the Executive Committee, and Chapter Committees to develop the Chapter's short and long term strategic, programmatic and financial goals and objectives.
Works with Treasurer to monitor and report the status of the budget
Supports fundraising chair in the development of an annual fundraising plan, to meet the annual budget goals. Oversees fundraising efforts including foundation grant solicitation and membership donations.
Works with appropriate committee chairs to design and implement effective conservation, legislative and fundraising programs and initiatives that reflect the Chapter’s goals, objectives and priorities.
Oversees lobbying by staff & volunteers and, when necessary, may represent the Chapter to elected officials, boards and commissions, and public events
Plans and implements an effective public relations program, develops contacts with the media to establish and maintain positive relations to maximize the chapter's credibility and position on issues
Designs and develops information systems to monitor the effectiveness of programs. Responsible for reporting outcomes to the Chapter ExComm.
Works with the Volunteer Coordinator and Membership Committee to recruit, engage and motivate volunteers and enable their role in the effectiveness of the Chapter. Oversees staff maintenance of volunteer database.
Attends and facilitates meetings, task forces, and events of the Chapter and externally. Builds strong relationships with other groups, elected officials, governmental agencies, etc. Represents the Chapter when appropriate.
Coordinates efforts with national headquarters staff and ensures that Chapter strategies are in compliance with national requirements.
Manages any/all Chapter staff in assigned operational or program areas and has responsibility for hiring and training of chapter staff. Writes and conducts performance appraisals and takes personnel actions as appropriate. Ensures Chapter is in compliance with Sierra Club’s employment policies and practices. Facilitates and encourages coordination between staff and appropriate volunteers.
Reviews staff time report(s) and ensures the reporting of this information in Work Day is accurate and timely in accordance with Sierra Club policies.
Assists the Conservation Chair in goal planning. By December 31st of each year write and have ExComm approved Conservation Goals for the coming fiscal year. Implement core conservation efforts and programs in conjunction with Chapter Conservation Chair and staff. Manages staff for same goals.
Assists other Committee Chairs, and staff as delegated, in goal planning. By December 31st of each year write and have ExComm approved goals for the coming fiscal year. Supports volunteers in their execution of effective Chapter Committees.
Supports volunteers in the effective communication between Chapter Committees, Groups, members, and the public.
Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications.

Knowledge & Skills:

B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, Public Administration, Nonprofit Organizational Management, or a closely related field.
At least 3 years’ experience in fundraising, grassroots organizing, training, and motivating volunteers, coalition building and lobbying.
Experience with personnel and financial management experience to manage substantial budget including 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) funding.
Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking ability.
Significant experience in fundraising, including major donor development and grant writing.
Excellent knowledge and background in specific issue areas of the environmental field related to assigned programs and campaigns.
Prior experience and knowledge of the legislative process and political compliance.
Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
A strong base of knowledge on environmental issues.
