Chief Government and Community Relations Officer
Job Description.
Under the direction of the Associate Chancellor serves as Chief Government and Community Relations Officer (CGRO) for the UC Davis campus and health system, leading multiple legislative, budget, advocacy, and community-based relationship-building strategies, projects and activities to ensure achievement of higher education, healthcare, and research objectives and aspirations. Serves as the official spokesperson to elected and other government officials and their staffs and to community, business and civic organizations and opinion-leaders.
Responsible for providing vision, executive leadership, and management for comprehensive, UC Davis-wide government relations, community relations and advocacy programs. The CGRO proposes, develops and implements government relations, community relations, and advocacy strategies that assist UC Davis in building awareness, understanding and support for activities, initiatives and aspirations; in the process promotes achievement of key campus goals and enhances the reputation and visibility of UC Davis among elected officials and their staffs, community opinion leaders and third party advocates at the local, state and national levels as it competes for faculty, students and staff and for external funding; encourages participation in the life of the campus and UCD Health; and adds to the reservoir of good will afforded to UC Davis.
Provides leadership to develop strategies and implement tactics to manage high profile, controversial and/or sensitive issues.

Work Environment: Work flexible hours and occasional weekends and holidays to meet business needs.
Must provide own transportation to meetings and events.
Extensive travel, largely domestically.

Required Qualifications.
Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience
Experience with the legislative process at all levels, including regulatory, budgeting, and key legislators.
Advanced skills to represent senior campus and medical center leaders with government officials and knowledge to accurately and effectively respond to inquiries from diverse constituencies while advancing University interests.
Advanced knowledge of management principles, including experience with personnel and budget administration and skill to motivate, guide and direct subordinate staff.
Expert strategic planning, analytical, negotiation and political acumen skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skill and experience making presentations to small and large groups.
Experience with the legislative process at all levels, including regulatory, budgeting, and key legislators.
