Job Description.

Context: The Conservation Program Director assists the Chapter Director in implementing policies and programs adopted by the Chapter Executive Committee; manages the Chapter’s conservation programs; supports legislative and advocacy programs; coordinates between Chapter programs and relevant National programs; and represents the Chapter to external partners and the public.

Scope: Carries out the policies, priorities and objectives of the Chapter for the assigned areas of programs and operations. Specific areas of responsibility and duties will be defined and will change over time in relation to evolving campaigns and resources. In defined program areas, responsible for managing designated staff, budget, and relevant operations, activities, volunteer engagement, and media relations.

Job Activities - General:

Assist the Chapter Director, Executive Committee, and Chapter Committees to develop the Chapter's short and long term conservation program goals and objectives
Responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating assigned conservation campaigns in Colorado, including Clean Energy for All (CEFA), Ready for 100 (RF100), Beyond Coal (BC), Clean Transportation for All (CTFA), and other campaigns in the Chapter’s conservation programs portfolio, in collaboration and coordination with national Sierra Club campaigns, the Colorado Chapter, volunteers and appropriate staff.
Work with CEFA, RF100, and BC campaigns and capacities to develop a unifying narrative across these campaigns within the Chapter, and to drive cross-campaign collaboration in planning and implementation across the state, to strengthen and build a movement for a just and equitable transition to 100% clean, renewable energy in Colorado.
Assist the Chapter Director and works with the Chapter Conservation, Legislative, Legal and Political Committee leaders to design and implement effective programs and initiatives to advance the chapter’s goals.
In defined program areas, in consultation with appropriate staff and volunteers, plan and implement an effective public relations program, build and maintain relationships with the media to maximize the Chapter's credibility and advance the Chapter’s goals.
Use (and design or refine as needed) information systems to monitor programs, including relevant staff, budget, and operations, activities, fundraising, volunteer engagement, and media relations. Report metrics to the Director and Executive Committee.
Work with Chapter Director, Treasurer, and any support staff to ensure orderly functioning of Chapter financial and accounting systems in relation to defined program areas.
Attend and facilitate meetings, task forces, and events. Build strong relationships with other groups, elected officials, governmental agencies, etc. Represent the Chapter when appropriate.
Coordinate efforts with national staff and ensures Chapter strategies comply with national requirements.
Manage Chapter staff in assigned program areas. Review staff time reports and ensure reporting of this information is accurate and timely in accordance with Sierra Club policies. Conduct performance appraisals and take personnel actions as appropriate. Mentor junior staff. In assigned program areas, ensure Chapter compliance with Sierra Club employment policies and practices.
Work with the Chapter volunteer coordinator to prepare and implement a recruitment strategy and organizing plan that ensures volunteers assume meaningful roles in Chapter programs.
Manage current and prospective partnerships in Colorado, and ensure that implementation of CEFA, RF100, BC and other campaigns aligns with Jemez Principles.
Seek opportunities to advance the Sierra Club’s equity, inclusion and justice initiatives through partnerships and engagement strategies. Follow the Jemez Principles for democratic organizing and build partnerships that are inclusive of impacted communities in the planning, decision-making, and implementation of campaigns.
Support the budget allocation process to ensure funding (from CEFA, RF100, BC, and other sources) complements existing campaign work in the state and is transparent. Provide analysis of campaign budgets and quarterly budget reports and forecasts.
In close coordination with the Chapter Director and Advancement committee, engage in donor communications and relationships especially to support and strengthen campaigns and activities in defined program areas.
Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications.

M.A./M.S in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a related field; M.B.A./M.A.M. in Organizational Management; or B.A./B.S. with additional professional development or experience.
At least 3 years’ experience in leading and managing innovative campaigns and programs; grassroots organizing, training, and motivating volunteers; coalition building; and policy advocacy.
Strong demonstrated written and oral communication skills as well as demonstrated public speaking ability.
Excellent knowledge and background in specific issue areas of the environmental field related to assigned programs and campaigns.
Experience and knowledge of policy-making, citizen advocacy, and legislative processes.
Demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers and partners.
