Job Description.

Tualatin Riverkeepers (TRK) is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Tualatin River and its watershed, located primarily in Washington County. TRK engages the public in this mission through four overarching programs: recreation, education, advocacy and restoration.

Located in a bustling and growing part of the Portland Metropolitan area, TRK’s membership and volunteers partner with farmers, industry, community-based organizations and the private sector to promote stewardship of Washington County’s natural assets and connect community members to the Tualatin River. TRK is part of a broader global Waterkeeper movement (www.waterkeeper.org) that has a rich history of linking human health, justice and livelihoods to clean water and environmental protection.

TRK is seeking a dynamic, outgoing and organized Community Organizer who will work across all four of TRK’s programs to organize public engagement opportunities responsive to the growing cultural diversity within Washington County. The Community Organizer will expand the community organizing platform to better integrate TRK’s programs, build stronger social capital, engage in community listening, build trust with partners and create transparent mechanisms for evaluation and change.

Key Responsibilities:

Work with staff to build, plan and evaluate TRK’s Green Jobs program (trainings and internships for immigrants and refugees living in Washington County with a focus on urban forestry). Coordinate with partner organizations to recruit participants, and establish partners to host interns and lead workshops. Conduct outreach to promote the impact of the Green Jobs program and recruit potential new partners.

Conduct volunteer and membership outreach at community events at least once a month, with a focus on events which connect with younger generations, rural-urban communities, and immigrant and refugee communities.

Direct the planning and implementation of TRK’s community outreach events and projects, ensuring these events will touch on community needs as expressed from underserved communities.

Work with staff, board and volunteers through equity, diversity and inclusion trainings to shift structure, perception and power within the organization and help identify where inequity is happening, how it works and how it can be changed internally.

Assist in planning and implementing TRK’s established annual outreach and fundraising events.
