Job Description.

Michigan Faith in Action (MFA) is hiring immediately for Full Time Community Organizers in Grand Rapids, Lansing and Detroit. Michigan Faith in Action (formally Flint Area Congregations Together) is building a faith-based movement to transform Michigan. MFA brings people of faith, institutions and organizations together to build community and to address the root causes and results of poverty, violence and division. MFA is part of the PICO National Network, the largest grassroots faith based community organization in the country. Affiliates of PICO aim to move a moral vision with political muscle for our country. Across the country, we are looking for qualified talent to lead and learn with their communities across faith, race and class. PICO and MFA prides itself on walking with communities in our journey toward justice for our families, ourselves and our future. Position Overview: This position is part of the “State Impact Project” a 5 state expansion effort within PICO to organize in new areas with an appetite for community organizing. As a Community Organizer, your job will be to identify local community members that desire change for their families. You will be working with multiple teams, that you help build, and develop analysis and power to shift current political dynamics at the local and state level. We believe that if we can build a consistent base of people that put pressure and build relationships at the state level, we can also influence decisions at the federal level. Ultimately, you will be helping shape policies that can have great impact on the quality of life for your neighborhoods and cities. You will also receive the best on the job training and support in the country. Candidates who have a background in Labor/Political/Community Organizing, adult basic education, those with social work backgrounds (interested in macro level) and other candidates with deep community knowledge will find this position fun and challenging. Responsibilities Include: Building strong teams of community members that understand and wield power. Meet with individuals from those teams and others community members one-on- one (1-1), minimum 15 per week. Participating in a 6-9 month comprehensive training program that will include: 1-1 practice, coursework on strategic relationships, power, racial analysis, story telling, organizing theory and management. Working closely with your staff team, director and coach. Assisting teams with legislative visits, public actions, meetings, demonstrations and/or rallies. Some travel out of state is required.

Required Qualifications.

Desire to build strategic relationships for a multi-faith and multi-racial organization and movement.
Willingness to learn, coach/be coached, practice with a group of peers, understand your strengths and gaps in one’s own development and awareness.
Basic knowledge of church and congregational structures.
Understanding of systems, can be analytical and thoughtful about context & challenges communities face.
Openness/understanding about one’s own experiences (social, political, economic and racial).
Ability to connect with people one-on- one and in groups, hold people accountable and be held accountable.
Bilingual (English/Spanish,)
Tech savvy
