Job Description.

The Public Policy & Legislative Affairs Coordinator is responsible for drafting, negotiating, and advocating for legislation and measures that create more opportunities for men and women with arrest and conviction records. This position uses policy advocacy to ensure that persons with arrest and conviction records are not unjustly denied employment or occupational licenses. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Draft, analyze and present legislation, amendments, and testimony as necessary to promote Safer’s overall policy agenda. To act as the focal point and lead coordinator for the Safer Policy Institute reporting to the VP of External Affairs. Assist in reviewing and drafting of opinion pieces, articles, and position statements for the Safer Policy Institute regarding legislation and regulation as well as any local, state and federal governmental developments. To undertake independent and/or collaborative research and to contribute to research strategies within the department. Work with the Policy & Advocacy staff to develop and implement strategies to promote Safer’s legislative priorities. Cultivate and maintain high-level relationships with a variety of policy makers and/or stakeholders. Provide Director of Policy and VP of External Affairs with regular reports on potential opportunities and advocacy efforts. Manage policy & strategy positioning database and coordinate with other departments to share and capture relevant information in databases or shared spreadsheets. Assist other Policy & Advocacy staff, helping them perform their duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications.

Travel as necessary to Springfield during legislative sessions
Knowledge of the intricacies and processes of governmental decision making
Ability to work with Director of Policy and report as expected
Ability to work well under pressure and within a diverse constituency
Ability to work across partisan lines
Self-motivated, outcome driven and excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Knowledge of legislation preparation and analysis
Sector/industry (various) knowledge and experience
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree or 2 years equivalent and relevant work experience
Experience developing and delivering reports and presentations to key governmental officials
Demonstrated government relations skills
Reliable vehicle and valid driver's license
