Responsibilities
If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team in the United States Attorneys' Office for the Southern District of West Virginia that is responsible for administering a public affairs program to inform and educate a state-wide or region-wide audience consisting of various racial,ethnic, economic and social groups, bar associations, community organizations, and law enforcement organizations and agencies. Typical work assignments will include:
Serves as the press coordinator for the United States Attorney's Office and the Southern District of Virginia;
Speaks for the United States Attorneys and the Southern District of West Virginia;
Represents the United States Attorney on selected issues when addressing leading figures within the government, business, the law enforcement community and members of the media;
Responsible for formulating, directing and executing a communication plan and media relations;
Maintaining professional contacts with representatives of local and national media;
Assist with enhancing the office's coordination and cooperation among various federal, state and local law enforcement organizations;
Provide a variety of office administrative support functions for the United States Attorney;
Responds to inquiries from reporters and media representatives; and
Participates in developing news releases, brief news media and prepares written material for dissemination and publication, including social media content, public service announcements, website content, annual reports, speeches, editorials and other related public information.
Required Qualifications.
You must be a United States Citizen or National.
Background investigation, credit check, and drug test required.
You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
Qualifications
GS-09 : To be qualified at the GS-09 level, you must have ONE (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service, OR Education, OR a Combination of Education and Experience.
Specialized experience is defined as having direct experience in media relations or news reporting; gathering facts and drafting press releases or news stories for publication; editing written press releases, news stories or reports; assisting in statewide or regional efforts to convey complex information concerning an organization's initiatives, programs, and operations. OR
Education : Possess one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Communications, Public Affairs): Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. OR
Combination of Education and Experience : Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of one (1) full year.
To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
