Job Description.

Position Summary: The Community Organizer coordinates efforts by PPSNE to develop and maintain grassroots support networks throughout Rhode Island on behalf of our mission. S/he implements new and innovative ways to inform the public, especially within the youth and young professional community, about political issues affecting reproductive health, access and rights in our State, and coordinates efforts by which the public can actively participate in the advocacy of these issues. S/he manages and supervises the Young Professionals project and Generation Action internship program. This responsibility includes informing interns about political and community issues affecting reproductive health and rights in our state and nationally. S/he coordinates efforts by which youth activists across Rhode Island can take action on their college campuses and in their communities to participate in the advocacy on these issues. Essential Functions: · Recruits, trains and manages the Generation Action internship program in Rhode Island · Recruit and manage volunteers, with an emphasis on recruitment of young adults/college students, to assist with advocacy efforts for reproductive health, access and rights issues throughout the State. Leverage current activities and coordinate events that encourage activism and develop grassroots and grass-tops support to create political power for reproductive health and rights in the State · Identify and engage potential activists from contacts made through the health center advocacy program. Recruit, train and supervise intern and/or volunteer leadership and management of the program · Develop and support local organizing teams in targeted geographic locations across the state. Work with these teams to identify and implement methods to build local political power by voting district and other key targeting efforts. Design and implement voter education projects, voter guides and other materials to engage, mobilize and turnout supporters for elections, meetings and other organizing efforts · Researches and networks with other Affiliates and like-minded organizations to determine successful mechanisms for developing and maintaining grass roots organizing programs · Provides administrative support for all aspects of the position to ensure the timely completion of daily administrative tasks · Assists with administrative duties such as managing the Planned Parenthood Action Network (PPAN) and Voter Activation Network (VAN) databases and supporting PPSNE social media presence through content development and coordinated email campaigns · Participates in the review of current organizational systems within the department and provides constructive feedback in order to create more effective systems that serve the interests of our customers · Supports the agency’s mission and all of the reproductive health services offered including family planning services, women’s health screenings, testing and treatment of STI’s, birth control methods and abortion services · Supports efforts of the agency’s diversity program to provide services that are culturally and linguistically competent; takes the initiative to develop own awareness and knowledge of diversity matters

Required Qualifications.

· Requires at least one (1) to two (2) years of related and/or applicable organizing experience on political or social issues and a proven ability to motivate, train, and develop other leaders, especially volunteers
· Requires ability equal to that derived from satisfactory completion of courses required for graduation from an accredited college or university with a Baccalaureate Degree
· Preference fora demonstrated understanding of both the Rhode Island and Federal Government political processes
· Familiarity with Windows based word processing and data management programs and spreadsheets
· Preferred familiarity with Voter Activation Network database functions and features
· Team centered cooperative work philosophy with ability to work in team structure and independently
· Must be able to travel throughout the state as needed (up to 50% of workdays require travel to off-site locations). [Note: Mileage reimbursement provided]
· Must be able to work mornings, afternoons, evening, nights and weekends as needed
