Job Description.

Under general supervision, a Research Assistant I-Paralegal I conducts policy and legal research for legislators, legislative committees, or legislative staff members. The employee in this classification provides back-up support to legislative staff in Bill Drafting, Fiscal Research, Legislative Analysis and committee staffing. Work is reviewed by senior staff for accuracy, completeness, content and methods. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in positions of this class.) Performs legal and policy research using various sources such as Westlaw, Lexis-Nexis, Legisnet, bill status, statutory retrieval, and library sources. Assists other professional staff in organizing, preparing, and presenting information for legislators and committees. Responds to information and reference questions from legislators, legislative staff, and the public. Reviews, proofreads, and edits legislative documents. Performs other duties as directed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications and Adobe Acrobat DC. Ability to present information clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Practical knowledge of the elements of reference and policy research. Ability to maintain composure and work cooperatively under pressure with legislators, legislative staff and the public on a daily basis. Ability to work objectively and impartially both with respect to members of both political parties and with respect to issues of state. Willingness and ability to work extended schedules.

Required Qualifications.

Requires a bachelor's degree and one year research experience or a bachelor's degree and a paralegal certificate or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
