Job Description.

Reporting to the Vice President of Community and Communications, WNJU’s Director, Community and Communications will help lead the development, execution and management of WNJU’s community, communications and stakeholder engagement strategies. These would all be forged with the aim of increasing brand awareness and generating ratings growth throughout the DMA. The ideal candidate will enjoy strong contacts amongst Tri-State community leaders, non-profit organizations, government officials, consulates and within the media. They will also possess deep experience organizing and executing mega events, including parades, festivals and other large-scale activities. They will also be experienced in driving sales and sponsorships in conjunction with event operations and planning, A strategic thinker possessing superior organization and management skills, the ideal candidate must be able to multi-task, possess exceptional time management, employ superior quality control and work as part of a team. With many station events regularly taking place on weekends, availability to work all dates and times is a must. In this role, the Director will work with the Vice President of Community and Communications to manage all tentpole community initiatives partaken by WNJU, as well as those hosted in Duopoly with WNBC. They will proactively propose new events and initiatives designed to further the priorities and goals of the station while managing the Community Budget and reviewing all external activities to ensure symmetry with the station’s strategic priorities and goals. The Director will also play an important role in strategic communications. Fully bi-lingual who can fluently craft press releases, statements and other important communications in both English and Spanish, the Director will possess strategic acumen and extensive public affairs experience. They will execute strategic communication plans developed in conjunction with the WNJU leadership team and enjoy pre-existing relationships with key journalists and reporters throughout the market and industry. They may also be asked to serve as an external station spokesperson. Finally, the Director will also lead all external activities involving on-air talent. They will maintain and regularly update all internal calendars tracking external activities. They will also vetting of external event invitations, construct and deliver all event briefings and coordinating all external appearances by WNJU executives and news talent. They will also regularly manage and update all on-air biographies and work with the digital team to ensure that that these updates are reflected on-line. Community Develop new strategic community plans which will support existing station priorities and goals, while further growing brand awareness across the DMA Develop new, community-focused initiatives that the station can embrace across the DMA Develop and further cultivate relationships between WNJU and relevant stakeholders Manage community-themed components of tentpole station initiatives, including the Food Drive, Health and Fitness Expo, Clear the Shelters and several parades and festivals Manage the review/vetting process for external invitations involving WNJU executives and news talent Manage internal calendar of events Represent WNJU at public events and venues Support Duopoly-themed events and initiatives with sister station WNBC Communications Construct comprehensive strategic outreach plans Construct comprehensive strategic communication plans Construct press releases, statements and media advisories Develop strategic messaging for external use Develop strategic internal messaging to support new and existing station initiatives Monitor media coverage Update and maintain media lists and talent bios Facilitate interviews between WNJU executives, talent and external media Serve as an external spokesperson, as needed

Required Qualifications.

Bachelor’s Degree from a fully-accredited college or university in Communications or a related field.
7+ years of professional experience with increasing levels of responsibility attained in public relations, public affairs, journalism, or a combination.
3+ years of professional experience attained as a communications/press office manager and authorized, on the record spokesperson. Must be able to furnish portfolio and/or work samples and news clips demonstrating experience in these twin roles.
Fully-bilingual with impeccable oral and written communications skills, including extensive experience crafting strategic plans and media communications such as press releases, media advisories and statements.
Strong contacts amongst Tri-State community leaders, non-profit organizations, government officials and international consulates.
Intimate knowledge of local, statewide and national legislative process and political landscape.
Crisis management experience, attained through the management of mega events within the New York Tri-State region.
Self-starter with initiative and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks in a professional and thorough manner.
Outstanding interpersonal skills, quality control and attention to detail.
Ability to manage confidential and sensitive information.
Social media savvy
Ability to be on call at any time, including nights and weekends.
