Job Description.
Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club promotes the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of America's Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. Within the Conservation Department, the AMC’s Volunteer Trails Programs engage teens and adults in meaningful and enjoyable trail stewardship opportunities. In close collaboration with the North Country Trails Volunteer Programs Supervisor, the Project Coordinator helps to identify projects and support Crew Leaders and teen and adult volunteer crews in the field.
Duties and Responsibilities
Assess trail conditions, and work with AMC Trails staff and land managers to identify priorities for volunteer trail crew projects
Train a team of 12 Crew Leaders on a variety of trail work techniques and best practices, as well as outdoor leadership and volunteer management
Communicate frequently with Crew Leaders to ensure that project goals are understood, appropriate tools are available, and site factors such as camping and water availability are taken into consideration
Visit volunteer crews in the field to support crew leaders and ensure the quality and safety of the trail work
Foster an environment of constructive communication, teamwork, and fun
Emphasize safety as well as minimum-impact outdoor practices on trail projects and at crew campsites
Spend at least one night per week on-call at Camp Dodge and be ready to respond to emergencies in the field
Assist with maintenance of tools, equipment and program facility as needed
Lead Adult Volunteer Vacation crews throughout the fall, and fill in as needed to lead Adult Volunteer Vacation and Teen Trail crews during the summer
Drive 12-passenger vans as needed
Required Qualifications.
Demonstrated trail work, outdoor leadership, volunteer management, and conservation experience
Experience spending extended periods of time outdoors and in backcountry settings
Ability to work well with people of diverse backgrounds
Ability to set goals, prioritize tasks, assign roles to a group, assess needs and manage tasks simultaneously
Strong self-motivation and communication skills
Ability to carry heavy loads (80+ lbs.) for long distances
Must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license and clear driving record (driving record check will be performed)
Clear criminal background check (performed by AMC Human Resources Dept.)
